29 June 2010 WRAPPED IN HELPING OUT Wrapped in helping out

They’re a motley group yet the Blandville Court Public Housing Estate Knitting Circle (pictured) have one thing in common - they want to help the less-fortunate.
The women, some of whom are Chinese and not proficient in English, help others by making wraps and blankets for the Wrap With Love organisation.
Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services began the program of social support for Blandville Courts’ 150 senior residents two years ago, and said in that time more than 200 wraps had been donated.
“They say over and over again that it’s for people who are cold and who are less fortunate then they are,” Social Support Coordinator Branka Ivkovic said.
On average, 15 ladies knit and socialise fortnightly. They each donate something different to the group, whether it be their sewing or knitting skills, morning tea or wool.
The Wrap With Love organisation is collecting wraps all year. Residents can donate their time at Ryde Library and to participate need to bring 8-ply wool and needles.
Knitting groups are held at: West Ryde Library every second Thursday of the month from 1pm to 3pm; Eastwood Library every Wednesday until July 7, then alternate Wednesdays from July 21, from 10.30am to 1pm; and the Gladesville Library every Monday during June and July, then the first Monday of the month from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
