GREAT COMMUNITY CLUB CONTINUES TO PROSPER

Great Community club continues to prosper

HUNTERS Hill Club at 12 Madeline Street Hunters Hill chalks up another milestone this month when it celebrates its 110th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, the Club has organised a Gala Anniversary celebration with fine wine and culinary delights on Saturday July 17 with fund raising for local charities.

Established in the Hunters Hill municipality since 1900, the Hunters Hill Club has continued to serve the community as a general social and recreational club for local and nearby residents for over a century.

Under the guidance of tireless Club Chairman John Collins and CEO Steve Hannan along with a progressive board of directors, the club can now boast 2380 members.

“I came on board just over five years ago and we have turned around a profit this year” said Mr Hannan.

He says the answer to his success is getting behind the community through sponsorships and attracting members, which he has done by updating the club’s facilities.

“We are now competitive with all other venues.”

“Not too many clubs have been around that long... it certainly is (a great achievement),” he added.

The Club throw tremendous support behind the community - sponsoring local sporting groups and donating prizes to charity/fund raising events.

Patrons can enjoy the facilities and serene surrounds including fine dining at Madeline’s, which is open seven days for lunch and dinner.

A major collage of photos and memorabilia will be on display at the Gala Dinner and right throughout the month of July.

Mr Collins said the community had embraced the updated facilities and thanked everyone for their loyal support.

The late Hunters Hill identity and long serving Club member R.E ‘Mac’ Taplin wrote in his excellent journal “Club Life Without Tears - A History of the Hunters Hill Club Ltd 1900 to 1993:
Hunters Hill Municipality in 1900 was considered an isolated community of 4000 residents, serviced by ferries from Lane Cove and Parramatta River and by horse drawn vehicles over two low level bridges.

Football, cricket, athletics, tennis, boating, golf, croquet and lawn bowls were the interests combined with social groups that formed the club facility in 1900.

By March 1901 four rinks were playable as were four tennis courts.

Today, Hunters Hill Club retains its sporting and social community interaction utilising the facilities accumulated over many years for local and nearby residents.

Forgotten photos found in steel box

Just as the Hunters Hill Club prepares for its 110th birthday celebrations (1900-2010), an original steel box was unearthed in a storeroom marked ‘Hunters Hill Recreation Club 1900’. Obviously unseen for many years, locals will be able to search great grandparents and relatives from the 1930s to 1980s from many well preserved black and white photos and original documents.
