Couple set to travel from Peking to Paris in a trusty old Holden
GREG and Liz Newton, of Hunters Hill, are about to embark on a 14,500km trek from Beijing as part of the Peking to Paris Endurance Rally, from September 10.

The Newtons will dive a fully rally-prepared cream 1952 Holden 48-215, colloquially known as an FX, and will cover the distance in 37 days.

Highlights of the trip include the Great Wall of China, Russia, inner and outer Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, Greece and Italy.

“The rally route takes us across some of the most demanding terrain in the world and has us arriving in Paris on October 16,” Mr Newton, who has lived in Hunters Hill for the past 33 years, said.

Their car will be shipped to China on Saturday, July 19.

“When we entered the rally we recognised that it was a great opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause, and none better we felt than the Fred Hollows Foundation, which is inspired by the work of the late Prof Fred Hollows (1929-1993).

“Fred was an eye doctor, a skilled surgeon of international renown and a social justice activist who championed the right of all people to high-quality and affordable eye care and good health.”

All the details of the Newtons’ journey and the car can be found on their website at peking2paris.com
