14 July 2010 HILLIES THUMP HORNSBY Hillies thump Hornsby
Hunters Hill first grade rugby team will go into the final six games of the season full of confidence after a 53-17 victory over Hornsby in the NSW Suburban Division 2 competition.
Fullback Burzin Mehta, Ben Bates and five eighth Bruce Purcell all starred for a Hillies side that dominated the set piece. The work in the line outs and scrum has improved week by week, and this provided the service for the speed in the back-line. Matt Lane made a return to the side on the wing and the new combination paid dividends.
Purcell controlledthe ball well in phases and his boot was always reliable.Mehta was dangerous running from the back and it gives coach Peter Allen options with the talented squad assembled at Boronia Park.
“We have a good mix with some great potential in this squad,” said Allen.
“For every player who has had to miss games due to injury, we have had other players step in and look solid. The passion at times has been great and I’m happy to have the selection headache with Benny Smith, Duncan Taylor and our captainDave Weston returning from injury this week.
“There have been some stand out performers in the squad from the likes of Nick Giacomini, Alex Light, David Marshall, Chris Groves and Cam Van Oirschot. Nick Roach has worked hard for his spot at hooker.”
Hunters Hill seconds won 46-12 with strong games from Jules Arndt, Jesse Croucher and James Hammond; thirds lost 12-5 despite solid efforts from Luke MacLennan, Max Pisu and John Shingler; fourths won 10-7 with Richie Colley scoring the winning try and Colts defeated leaders Hornsby 17-7.
