21 July 2010 HUNTERS HILL QUILT SHOW Hunters Hill Quilt Show
The 14th bi-annual Hunters Hill Quilt Show promises to be the best ever.
In the tradition of previous years the Quilt Show will be held in the Hunters Hill Town Hall, Alexandra Street, Hunters Hill for three days from Friday August 13 to Sunday August 15 between 10am and 4.30pm.
Visitors are invited to browse, admire and critique the exhibited 80 unique quilts made by members of the group.
They can enjoy the ‘wagga’ display, buy new and old quilts, add to their sewing needs from the local quilt shop and finally, stop for tea or coffee and home made goodies.
Proceeds of the Quilt show will be donated to Giant Steps Sydney: a school located in Gladesville catering specifically for children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
In 2003, the work of Giant Steps first came to the notice of the Hunters Hill quilters when one of their members talked about the excellent progress her autistic grandson was making under their specialist care.
This led to an on-going relationship between the quilters and Giant Steps with the contribution of quilts to raffle and auction at their fundraising events.
The program at Giant Steps Sydney is trans-disciplinary, comprising high-level intensive programs for children and young people aged 2-18 years of age.
The approach is one that combines both occupational and speech therapy, and music, with teaching and education prepared in consultation with parents. The school was started 15 years ago by a group of parents who had children with autism.
In previous years the group have provided donations to Redkite, a charity supporting the families of children with cancer; Cure Cancer Foundation; and the Familial Cancer Service at Westmead Hospital.
Formed in 1982, the group have donated over 700 quilts to local community projects and in excess of $111,000 to various local charities.
