Hunters Hill Local News

21 July 2010
IT'S ON AUGUST 21

It's on August 21

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has called a snap election for Saturday August 21 with a speech full of rhetoric and slogan repeating “moving forward” 36 times as her mantra.

‘Moving forward’ - ad nauseam!

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has retorted that Julia Gillard doesn’t want voters to look back at all Labor’s broken promises, disasters and failed programs and has launched his own slogan of “stand up for real action”.

Local candidates hit the hustings immediately with both major candidates for Bennelong on the campaign trail in Eastwood shopping centre and at sporting events.

Incumbent MP Maxine McKew and Liberal challenger John Alexander campaigned in Eastwood and attended Ryde Hunters Hill Hockey Club’s Keith Thompson field upgrade celebrations at North Ryde.

IN NORTH SYDNEY electorate Labor has selected community legal educator Leta Webb of Milson’s Point to contest the seat against Liberal incumbent and Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey. More inside.

ALEXANDER: ‘A BETTER FUTURE FOR AUSTRALIA’

JOHN ALEXANDER says this election is about ending the waste, repaying the debt, stopping the taxes, stopping the boats and easing the pressure on families.

“I will be standing up for the people of Bennelong with real action to ease the pressure on families.

“After nearly three years of Labor, families are really finding it tough with the increased cost of living, the burden of rising interest rates and the threat of Labor’s hidden taxes to pay off its debt.”

He accuses Ms McKew of being silent on issues of concern to the people.

“Where has Maxine McKew been when people raised issues about social housing plans that didn’t allow for community consultation?

“Where has she been when billions have been lost in school hall rip-offs and lives lost under the pink batts fiasco?

“The housing pressures, the traffic jams and the lack of public transport are all the result of Labor’s mismanagement and failure to invest in roads and essential infrastructure for our community’s future.”

Mr Alexander claims “it’s quite clear” that the Labor party has no plan and cannot deliver, whereas in contrast the Liberal Party will deliver real action.

“We will end the waste and save money – as families do – by not wasting it.

“We will repay the debt that’s been increasing at $100 million a day.

“We will stop the boats and have a strong border protection policy.

“We stand for giving decisions on important health services back to local communities.

“I will be working hard every day, talking to the community, listening to their issues and representing their views, to seek their support on August 21.”

‘A Clear Choice for Voters’

Bennelong MP MAXINE MCKEW says next month’s election decision is clear for voters, either a committed government led by Julia Gillard or a step back with Tony Abbott. Her opponent, Liberal candidate for Bennelong JOHN ALEXANDER, says it will be an opportunity for the community to choose between more of the waste and mismanagement of Labor, or a better future for Australia with the Liberal Party.

McKEW: ‘A COMMITTED GOVERNMENT’

MAXINE McKEW says she is committed to better schools and hospitals, a strong economy and a sustainable Australia.

“Since being elected in 2007 I’ve worked hard to build a better Bennelong. I seek the support of the voters in Bennelong to be part of a Gillard Government that will continue to move Australia forward.

“The choice for voters is clear. Julia Gillard is committed to moving Australia forward while Tony Abbott will take us back to the days of cuts in health and education and back to the worst aspects of WorkChoices.

“The Gillard Government will deliver a strong economy and bring the budget to surplus by 2013.

“In health, we will fund 3,000 new nursing training places and 1,300 GPs in training over the next three years.

“As well, Julia Gillard believes in a sustainable Australia and that’s why she’ll invest record amounts in solar and other renewables.”

Ms McKew said the Gillard Government was determined to move forward and deliver a world-class education system.

“I share the Prime Minister’s belief that every child deserves the chance of a quality education and this is why I’ve fought to secure record local investment in education,” Ms McKew said

“We’ve invested more than $88 million for 107 modernisation projects to upgrade every local school and over $8.3 million to refurbish and upgrade the Ryde and Meadowbank TAFE campuses.

“In higher education I’m committed to providing first class facilities for Macquarie University and I’ve secured over $82 million for refurbishments and upgrades to the campus.”

Ms McKew said Liberal Party candidate John Alexander wanted to be part of a Tony Abbott government that would cut the health and education services that local families rely on.

Tony Abbott was proposing deep cuts in health, including eliminating GP super clinics and electronic health records.

Tony Abbott also wanted to cut education including Trades Training Centres and the Computers in Schools program.
